HENRY F. OWENS

Today, Henry F. Owens, Inc. is the oldest minority-owned company in New England.

With a will to succeed and a drive to make money, at the age of eleven, Henry F. Owens, Jr. asked his father, a blacksmith, to borrow $50 to buy a horse and buggy to help support his seventeen brothers and sisters, “Because I can help make you some money.”

In 1927, Henry began peddling ice from a nearby warehouse to neighbors, and by bringing baggage to and from Boston’s piers for his Cambridge neighborhood’s large Italian immigrant population. A Cantabridgian, he started his business on Shepard St.

For years, Henry concentrated on rigging and moving the world’s finest pianos for many of Boston’s famous visiting artists. Henry moved pianos for Arthur Fielder at Symphony Hall and Tangle wood, as well as moved Raytheon’s first microwave oven.
